{{Book Review}} Untangled

This post has been moved to my new blog! You can find it here.

Think you'll never measure up? Think again.

We all want to feel valued. We crave approval and acceptance in the eyes of family, friends, and even strangers. But when we seek confirmation that we areenough using the world's standards, it seems like we always fall short. As a result, we cannot believe we are who God says we are--accepted, loved, beautiful, and treasured.

With hope-filled writing and plenty of hard-won personal advice, Carey Scott teaches you how to untangle your self-esteem from the world and anchor it in Jesus. She lovingly shows you that God was intentional in how he made you--and that he is pleased with his work. You'll learn practical strategies to escape the unattainable standards of our performance-based world. And you'll find comfort in the fact that you are not alone on the journey.

"If you feel like you're simultaneously 'too much' and 'not enough,' Carey gets you, gives you hope, and guides you to the one and only perfect One, in whose love you are complete."--Cheri Gregory, coauthor of The Cure for the "Perfect" Life

{{Book Review}} Every Bride Needs a Groom by Janice

Small-town girl Katie Fisher is planning her wedding. Sure, her boyfriend hasn't managed to pop the question just yet, but that doesn't mean she shouldn't enter a contest in Texas Bride magazine to win the dress of her dreams, right? But when her boyfriend breaks up with her and takes a job in another town--the very same day Katie wins her dream dress--her world is turned upside down. Should she claim her prize? And will the hunky former pro-basketball player who runs the swanky Dallas bridal shop--yeah, you read that right--catch on to her humiliation if she does?

Janice Thompson designs a romance sure to delight, with plenty of fish-out-of-water moments, a hilarious supporting cast, and more of the wedding biz world her readers adore.

*My Review*
I have never read any of Janice Thompson's books before, but I fell in love with the cover and was looking forward to this one. The story line was funny, but it wasn't as great as I thought it would be.

Janice Thompson gives creative chapter titles, that's something that I did enjoy about this book.

The chapter titles in this book were all Loretta Lynn song titles. I thought that was pretty cool.

There were some innuendos in this book that were not necessary at all. It's never funny(or okay) to make light of sin.

In the end...."Every Bride Needs a Groom" is a light-hearted read, with likeable characters.

Janice Thompson is a seasoned romance author and screenwriter. An expert at pulling the humor from the situations we get ourselves into, Thompson offers an inside look at the wedding business, drawing on her own experiences as a wedding planner. {{Book Review}} The Legacy by Dan Walsh and Gary Smalley

One young man is about to discover the true cost of independence

For years, Doug Anderson has been drifting slowly but steadily away from both his family and his faith. His parents have been trying to reach him before he falls too far. His friend Christina hopes what she is seeing online isn't true. But sometimes you have to hit bottom before you're ready to grow up.

Just as things begin to settle down a bit, Doug's life takes a turn that requires every bit of faith and patience for both his family and Christina--whose growing feelings for Doug, a man who writes her off as not worth his time, keep her off balance. Will Doug's crisis finally clear his vision and help him focus on what he has right in front of him?

*My Review*
"The Legacy" is book 4 of the Restoration Series. Doug is a junior in college is leading two lives; the one he shows his family and the one he has with his friends. What he doesn't seem to realize is how much his family worries about him. When those two worlds collide, he’ll have to  choose who he wants to be before it’s too late.

This is a "prodigal son" type story. Doug is the youngest in the Anderson family and is following the typical college kid pattern. He strays from the ways his parents have raised him and starts participating in activities they would not be happy about. He starts by leading a double life, which we all know cannot be hidden forever.

If you want to know what happens, you'll have to read the book for yourself...because I don't want to spoil it for anyone. But I promise it's good!

The emotionally gripping conclusion to the series critics are calling . . .

"Captivating."--RT Book Reviews

"Emotional."--Booklist

"Uplifting."--Library Journal

"Satisfying."--New York Journal of Books

{{Book Review}} The Creole Princess by Beth White

Torn between loyalties to family and flag, one young woman is about to discover that her most important allegiance is to her heart.

It is 1776, and all along the eastern seaboard the American struggle for independence rages. But in the British-held southern port of Mobile, Alabama, the conflict brewing is much quieter--though no less deadly.

Lyse Lanier may be largely French in heritage, but she spends most of her time in the company of the ebullient daughter of the British commander of Mobile. When a charming young Spanish merchant docks in town, Lyse is immediately struck by his easy wit and flair for the dramatic. But is he truly who he makes himself out to be? Spies abound, and Spain has yet to choose a side in the American conflict. Is Lyse simply an easy mark for Rafael Gonzalez to exploit? Or are his overtures of love as genuine as Spanish gold?

With spectacular detail that brings the cultural gumbo of the Colonial Gulf Coast alive, Beth White invites you to step into a world of intrigue and espionage from a little-known slice of the American Revolutionary War.

*My Review*
I absolutely could NOT put this book down once I started reading. It is so full of details that will take the reader to a little known piece of American history.

Beth White is a master at bringing these fictional characters to life. The story is so interesting and intriguing that I kept reading late into the night and morning, even though I KNEW I needed to sleep. I absolutely had to know what happened between Rafa and Lyse. Their characters are so complex, yet endearing.

I loved learning about Mobile and its role in the American Revolutionary War. I didn't always love history and anything war related though. When I was younger I absolutely hated history...it's only since my middle daughter was born in 2009 that I've been interested in history and such.

Though I have not read Book 1, "The Pelican Bride",I really enjoyed The Creole Princess. I look forward to reading more from Beth White and hope she never stops researching and writing.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction with some romance.

Beth White is the award-winning author of The Pelican Bride. A native Mississippian, she teaches music at an inner-city high school in historic Mobile, Alabama. {{Book Review}} Anna's Crossing by Suzanne Woods Fisher

Some endings are really beginnings . . .

On a hot day in 1737 in Rotterdam, Anna König reluctantly sets foot on the Charming Nancy, a merchant ship that will carry her and her fellow Amish believers across the Atlantic to start a new life. As the only one in her community who can speak English, she feels compelled to go. But Anna is determined to complete this journey and return home--assuming she survives. She's heard horrific tales of ocean crossings and worse ones of what lay ahead in the New World. But fearfulness is something Anna has never known.

Ship's carpenter Bairn resents the somber people--dubbed Peculiars by the deckhands--who fill the lower deck of the Charming Nancy. All Bairn wants to do is to put his lonely past behind him, but that irksome and lovely lass Anna and her people keep intruding on him.

Delays, storms, illness, and diminishing provisions test the mettle and patience of everyone on board. When Anna is caught in a life-threatening situation, Bairn makes a discovery that shakes his entire foundation. But has the revelation come too late?

Bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher invites you back to the beginning of Amish life in America with this fascinating glimpse into the first ocean crossing--and the lives of two intrepid people who braved it.

*My Review*
I've read several books by Suzanne Woods Fisher in the past, and this one is a great read as well.

I love a book that I can get so deeply lost in that you feel like you are there in the story. This book is great at describing the sailing conditions, the trip, & the storms.

The characters were all so very well developed and are a vital part of this book. Every page is filled with history and the daily life of those that were on the ship

I absolutely love this book. I've always been interested in genealogy and old records. If you are looking for a great historical fiction, then this book might just been for you!

I recommend it to everyone!

{{Book Review}} The Trouble with Patience

The Trouble with Patience by Maggie Brendan

"Maggie Brendan deftly captures the flavor of the Old West in a sweet love story filled with suspense and well-developed, interesting characters that will surely capture the hearts of readers."--Kathleen Morgan, author of the Brides of Culdee Creek series

Patience Cavanaugh has lost hope in romance. The man she yearned to marry is dead and her dreams are gone with him. Now she is consumed with restoring a dilapidated boardinghouse in order to support herself.

Despite Patience's desire for solitude, Jedediah Jones, the local marshal with a reputation for hanging criminals, becomes an ever-looming part of her life. It seems like such a simple arrangement: She needs someone with a strong back to help her fix up the boardinghouse. He needs a dependable source of food for himself and his prisoners. But as she gets to know this "hanging lawman," Patience finds there is far more to him than meets the eye--and it could destroy their tenuous relationship forever.

With a keen eye for historical detail and a deft hand at romantic tension, Maggie Brendan invites you to a Montana gold rush boomtown, where vices and virtues are on full display and love is lying
in wait.

*My Review*
Patience Cavanaugh is trying to get her grandma's old boarding house up and running. Because of that she isn't left with much time for romance with her life filled with scrub brushes and paint.

{{Book Review}} The Crimson Cord

"Rahab's story is one of the most moving redemption accounts in Scripture. The Crimson Cord perfectly captures all the drama of the original, fleshing out the characters with care and thought. Jill's storytelling skills kept me reading late into the night. A beautiful tale, beautifully told!"--Liz Curtis HiggsNew York Timesbestselling author of Mine Is the Night

Wife to a gambler who took one too many risks, Rahab finds herself sold as a slave to cover her husband's debt. Forced into prostitution, she despairs of ever regaining her freedom and her self-respect. But when Israelite spies enter Jericho and come to lodge at her house, Rahab sees a glimmer of hope and the opportunity of a lifetime.

In one risky moment, she takes a leap of faith, puts her trust in a God she does not know, and vows to protect the spies from the authorities. When the armies of Israel arrive weeks later, Rahab hopes they will keep their promise, but she has no idea what kind of challenges await her outside Jericho's walls--or if she will ever know the meaning of love.

Under Jill Eileen Smith's talented hand, the familiar story of Rahab bursts forth in high definition. Immerse yourself in a world of dark and dusty streets, clandestine meetings, and daring escapes as a mysterious biblical figure claims her full humanity--and a permanent place in your heart.

**My Review**
I'm sure we all know the story of Rahab in the Bible, even if it was a short story. I don't know about everyone else, but I personally have always wondered more about her story.

Author Jill Eileen Smith gives us a backstory for Rahab the prostitute, even though much of it is just guessing, because we really don’t know what happened. The tale Smith tells is a wonderful one. This was a difficult story to read though, even for me as Ms. Smith’s version puts Rahab as a prostitute against her will. It is a hard story to follow as Rahab is faced with many cruel men taking charge of her life, and honestly it is very painful to watch/read.

Anyone looking for a well written novel, even one that was hard to read at times because of the subject matte should check this book out. I think she approached the subject as best she could and wrote a wonderful book that will resonate forgiveness to all of us.

Jill Eileen Smith is the bestselling author of the Wives of King David series, the Wives of the Patriarchs series, and The Desert Princess, first in the Loves of King Solomon series. Her research into the lives of biblical women has taken her from the Bible to Israel, and she particularly enjoys learning how women lived in Old Testament times. Jill lives with her family in southeast Michigan. Learn more at www.jilleileensmith.com.

**My Review**

The book  "It’s Not Who You Know, It’s Who You Are: Life Lessons from Winners" written by Pat Williams and Jim Denney, tells short stories about some of the conversations that Pat Williams has had with several celebrities.

These short stories show that celebrities are often times more than what we see or read about them, it’s how they truly are. Pat Williams also tells stories that show the morals and the motivation behind the successes in these individuals' lives.

I really liked this book because I could read one  or two of the short stories in one sitting. It’s the perfect book to read if you don't have much time.

These stories were all very inspirational. Each of the people in these stories faced some type of obstacle that they overcame. It is a really a good for people who are looking for motivation in their life.

It was such a great read!
